Kerala 10-06-2025 – In a major legal development with potentially far-reaching political implications, the Kerala High Court on Tuesday issued a summons to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following an explosive election petition filed by BJP candidate N. Haridas. The petition challenges Gandhi’s resounding victory in the November 2024 Lok Sabha by-election from Wayanad, which she won by a margin of over 5 lakh votes.

The court, after examining submissions from Haridas’s counsel, admitted the petition and directed Priyanka Gandhi to appear in connection with the matter. The case has been listed for hearing in August 2025, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle.

Haridas filed a petition alleging that Gandhi failed to disclose details of several immovable properties owned by her and her husband, Robert Vadra, along with various investments and movable assets under Vadra’s name. These omissions, according to Haridas, violated the mandatory disclosure provisions under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Haridas further accused Gandhi of misleading voters through the suppression of financial details, thereby influencing the electoral outcome through corrupt practices as defined under Section 123 of the Act. Additionally, she alleged that Gandhi exercised undue influence over voters during the campaign.

The Kerala High Court, presided over by Justice K Babu, admitted the petition after hearing submissions from Haridas’s counsel. The court subsequently issued summons to Priyanka Gandhi, directing her to respond to the allegations.

The matter has now been posted for hearing in August, where further legal proceedings will take place.

Haridas has approached the court seeking to declare the election void based on the alleged violations and misconduct. The case is expected to be closely watched, given its potential implications for electoral transparency and accountability.
