Delhi Police Arrests Supreme Court Lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay and Five Others in Inflammatory Slogans at Jantar Mantar

A protest march was organised on Sunday at jantar mantar against “Colonial-era laws” by Upadhyay, and the rally had hundreds of people in attendance. Purported videos of the event showed people shouting slogans threatening harm to Muslims.

While distancing himself from the event Upadhyay said that his event had concluded by 12 pm while slogans were raised around 5 pm.

The other arrested persons are Deepak Singh, Deepak Kumar, Vineet Kranti, Vinod Sharma and Preet Singh.

Speaking to the Judicial Quest News Network Delhi Police said that it sought three-day custody of Bajpai and Deepak Singh.

The police have also urged the court to send Ashwini Kumar to judicial remand for 14 days, the court has reserved the orders.

A special team of was stationed outside Deepak’s house and he was picked up around 12.40am when he returned from outside.

The rally was organised by Ashwini Kumar and sought to repeal the colonial-era laws and to make Uniform for all citizens across India.

Ashwini is known for his public interest litigation petitions before Supreme Court.

Ashwini had also filed a petition in Supreme Court last month against the Indian Penal Code seeking a judicial panel or a body of export code for ensuring rule of law and equality.

The unknown persons have been booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 1889 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and section 51 of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority Act for violating COVID-19 protocol.

A video of the group chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and anti-Muslim slogan surfaced on social media handles of journalists. Police are now identifying the men who were seen in the video chanting anti-Muslim.

Yesterday the Delhi High Court Women Lawyers Forum has addressed a letter to the Registrar of the Supreme Court condemning the allegedly inflammatory slogans raised by Supreme Court Lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay.
