During his address at the 32nd  annual convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bangalore, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud underscored the vital importance of patience and self-belief in navigating the demanding legal profession. In an era characterized by rapid change and a pervasive sense of urgency, he urged graduates to approach their careers—and life—with a steady hand and a clear mind.

Reflecting on the early challenges faced by new lawyers, CJI Chandrachud acknowledged feelings of inadequacy, isolation, and burnout that often accompany the initial stages of legal practice. “You are not alone,” he reassured the graduates, emphasizing the necessity of cultivating a robust support network. He encouraged them to invest time in relationships with family and friends, reminding them that true leadership does not equate to solitude, even when it may feel that way.

Drawing from personal experience, the Chief Justice spoke about navigating conflicts within the Supreme Court. He highlighted the importance of self-reflection and the inner voice guided by core values of liberty, dignity, and autonomy. “When confronted with differing viewpoints,” he explained, “I turn inward, appealing to those eternal values that guide my decisions.” He urged young lawyers to trust their instincts and personal values as they confront unique challenges in their careers, likening this inner guidance to the North Star, illuminating their path through uncharted waters.

CJI Chandrachud further cautioned against the perils of hasty decisions, particularly in the legal field, where the pressure to respond quickly can compromise mental health and long-term goals. “Your profession will demand your full attention, but remember, you are in this for the long haul,” he stated, reiterating the necessity of patience.

He concluded by reminding graduates that their law degree provides them with knowledge, but it is their choices that will ultimately define their legacy. Every decision—whether standing up for justice, learning from missteps, supporting colleagues, or charting new career paths—contributes to the broader canvas of their lives.

As they embark on their legal journeys, CJI Chandrachud’s words serve as a guiding light, encouraging the next generation of lawyers to navigate their careers with integrity, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to their personal values.

Attorney General of India, R. Venkatramani, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for young lawyers to balance a humanistic approach with the demands of advancing legal technology. He articulated the importance of visionary allegiance in maintaining social and economic order, encouraging graduates to seek the right answers through a commitment to these principles.
