Chief Justice of India Embraces Veganism & Advocates for Inclusion, Inspired By His Family
In a heartfelt address on Monday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud revealed that he has adopted a vegan lifestyle, inspired by his daughter’s call for a cruelty-free existence. Speaking at the launch of the Delhi High Court’s digital law reports and the inauguration of a Sagar Ratna restaurant in the court’s premises, CJI DY Chandrachud shared personal insights into his journey toward a more compassionate way of living.
CJI DY Chandrachud, who was joined by his wife, emphasized that his commitment to veganism extends beyond dietary choices. “I have turned vegan because my daughter inspired me to lead a cruelty-free life,” he stated. He further elaborated, “I no longer use leather or silk products, and neither does my wife.” His decision reflects a broader commitment to ethical living and aligns with his family’s values.
The event also marked the opening of a new Sagar Ratna outlet within the Delhi High Court complex. This particular restaurant will be managed by individuals who are neurodiverse, highlighting the CJI’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities for differently-abled individuals.
In his address, CJI DY Chandrachud spoke passionately about his experiences with differently-abled individuals, noting, “Every day, as I interact with differently-abled people, I am continually impressed by their tremendous potential.” He described the Sagar Ratna initiative as more than just a one-off project, but rather as part of a broader movement towards inclusion. The CJI recalled the enthusiastic reception of Mitti Cafe, a similar venture entirely run by disabled individuals, which was established in the Supreme Court premises in November 2023. “When Mitti Cafe was set up, it was warmly appreciated by the legal community,” he said.
CJI DY Chandrachud personal and professional commitments reflect a growing recognition of the need for both ethical choices and inclusive practices. His actions not only promote a cruelty-free lifestyle but also support the integration of differently-abled individuals into mainstream society, setting a precedent for future initiatives in both the legal and social spheres.
