Centre Elevates Justices Anjaria, Bishnoi, and Chandurkar to Supreme Court Apex Court Now at Full Strength

New Delhi, 28th May 2025 In a landmark move, the Central Government on Thursday notified the appointment of Justices N.V. Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S. Chandurkar as judges of the Supreme Court of India, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai.
The announcement was shared by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Arjun Ram Meghwal, via a social media post, confirming that the appointments were made by the President of India after due consultation with the Chief Justice.
With these appointments, the Supreme Court reaches its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges a rare and significant moment for the country’s top judiciary.
The New Appointees:
Justice N.V. Anjaria
Currently the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, Justice Anjaria began his legal career in 1988 in the Gujarat High Court, where he practiced in constitutional, civil, labour, and service law. He was appointed an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in 2011 and became a permanent judge in 2013. He assumed charge as Karnataka’s Chief Justice in February 2024.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Hailing from the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Bishnoi is presently serving as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court. Enrolled as an advocate in 1989, he built a distinguished career in service, constitutional, and criminal law. He became a judge of the Rajasthan High Court in 2013 and was elevated to Chief Justice in February 2024.
Justice Atul S. Chandurkar
A judge at the Bombay High Court, Justice Chandurkar began his legal practice in Mumbai before moving to Nagpur in 1992. Appointed an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013, he has since handled a broad spectrum of legal matters and earned a reputation for judicial clarity and integrity.
Background and Impact:
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the elevation of these three judges on May 26, 2025. Their inclusion strengthens the judiciary with a rich mix of regional representation and legal experience, ensuring a diverse bench to address complex constitutional matters.
This development is seen as a timely boost to the functioning of the apex court, ensuring timely justice and easing the workload on sitting judges.
