Bangaluru,6, February,2025. In a significant breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Puran Bahadur Rai, a key accused in the 2010 murder of Madan Tamang, former President of the Akhil Bhartiya Gorkha League (ABGL). Rai was apprehended today in Bommasandra, Maruthi Nagar, Jigani, in the Bengaluru Rural area of Karnataka, after evading justice for over seven years.
Rai, who had been on the run since 2017, had relocated from Darjeeling to Bengaluru to avoid the legal process. The case, originally registered in Darjeeling, was later transferred to the CBI following notifications from the Government of West Bengal and the Central Government. The investigation into the murder of Tamang, who was killed on May 21, 2010, in Darjeeling, was taken up by the CBI in January 2011.
Despite being charge-sheeted in the case, Rai had failed to attend trial proceedings since 2017. The Kolkata City Sessions Court had issued a proclamation against him on April 3, 2017, followed by an open-ended warrant on November 20, 2024, but he continued to remain absconding.
Following extensive efforts and technical analysis, the CBI was able to track down and arrest Rai. He will now be presented before the Competent Court for further proceedings.
