In a significant verdict, the Special CBI Court in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep, has convicted and sentenced two individuals, including the former Director of Education of Lakshadweep, Shri S.K.S. Yadav, and private individual Shri Ganesh, to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for their involvement in a major corruption case. The court also imposed a total fine of Rs. 33.84 lakh on the accused.
The case dates back to June 29, 2006, when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against Yadav, then Director of Education in Lakshadweep, and others based on allegations of corrupt practices. The charges revealed a deep conspiracy involving Yadav and private individuals, including Ganesh, related to the supply of school uniforms to children in Lakshadweep.
Investigations indicated that Yadav, in collusion with private parties, dishonestly obtained a financial gain of Rs. 5.25 lakh. The accused were found to have violated tender procedures, awarded contracts to ineligible vendors, and compromised the quality of uniforms, leading to significant financial loss. The corrupt actions of the accused were estimated to have caused a loss of Rs. 34 lakh to the Lakshadweep Administration.
Following a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on January 8, 2008, against the accused, who were later convicted by the court. This conviction serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of corruption and abuse of power in public offices.
