Lucknow, July 3, 2024 —
In a significant verdict today, the Special Judge for CBI Cases, Court No. 2, Lucknow, has sentenced Anand Prakash Tiwari to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 58,000 in connection with the murders of Dr. V.K. Arya and Dr. B.P. Singh in Lucknow. These cases were re-registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the directives of the Hon’ble High Court of Allahabad on July 27, 2011.
Dr. V.K. Arya, the then CMO of Family Welfare, Lucknow, was fatally shot by unknown assailants on October 27, 2010, while on his morning walk near his residence in Vikas Nagar. Similarly, Dr. B.P. Singh, also the CMO of Family Welfare, Lucknow, met the same fate on April 2, 2011, when he was shot during his morning walk in the Gomti Nagar area.
The investigations initially conducted by local police implicated Dr. Y.S. Sachan, the then Deputy CMO of Family Welfare, Lucknow (now deceased), for allegedly orchestrating the murders by hiring contract killers, including Anand Prakash Tiwari. Despite his alleged involvement, Dr. Sachan was not formally charged due to his death during the investigation phase.
Upon taking over the cases, the CBI filed supplementary chargesheets in May 2012, accusing Anand Prakash Tiwari under sections 120-B read with 302 IPC and sections 3/25/27 of the Arms Act. The prosecution presented 45 witnesses, introduced various documents, and cross-examined 4 defense witnesses to substantiate its case during the trial.
Following a thorough trial, the court found Anand Prakash Tiwari guilty of the charges and handed down the life sentence along with the monetary penalty.
This verdict marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families, underscoring the meticulous efforts of the CBI in ensuring accountability in cases of serious criminal offenses.
