Big Relief for Gali Janardhan Reddy: Telangana High Court Halts Conviction in Illegal Mining Case
(Judicial Quest News Network)
In a major development, the Telangana High Court on Wednesday stayed both the conviction and seven-year sentence of Karnataka MLA and former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy in a long-standing illegal mining case.
The stay comes just weeks after a trial court, on May 6, handed down the sentence — a verdict that would have led to Reddy’s immediate disqualification from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Reddy currently represents the Gangawati constituency.
His legal team argued that failing to suspend the conviction would trigger irreversible consequences, including a likely by-election, as the Election Commission would be compelled to announce fresh polls for the seat.
Justice K.Lakshman, who heard the plea today, agreed to grant relief by staying the conviction, allowing Reddy to retain his MLA seat — at least for now.
