In a significant stride toward deepening judicial diplomacy, Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai, undertook an official visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan, reaffirming the shared commitment to uphold justice, ethics, and rule of law between the two nations.

On October 25, 2025, Chief Justice Gavai called on His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and held a detailed interaction with Hon’ble Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay on October 24. The discussions centred around avenues for enhancing cooperation between the Indian and Bhutanese judiciaries, particularly in the realms of technology integration, capacity building, and judicial education.

Chief Justice Gavai conveyed the Indian judiciary’s readiness to extend support to its Bhutanese counterpart in adopting modern judicial technologies and strengthening institutional frameworks through shared learning and exchange programmes.

Furthering this vision, the Chief Justice engaged with students and faculty of the JSW School of Law in a special session graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechen Wangchuck and Hon’ble Chief Justice of Bhutan, Justice Norbu Tshering. In his address, Justice Gavai underscored the foundational values of compassion, wisdom, and ethical responsibility that must guide every member of the legal fraternity.

Marking a new chapter in Indo–Bhutan academic collaboration, the Chief Justice announced that two positions of Law Clerks at the Supreme Court of India will be offered annually to law graduates from Bhutan. The initiative aims to foster greater intellectual exchange and strengthen professional linkages between the two judiciaries, reaffirming the age-old spirit of friendship and mutual respect that binds India and Bhutan.
