In a significant move, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has expressed its appreciation for the Union Government’s decision to revise the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a step that underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and constructive dialogue with the legal community.

Under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Law & Justice has taken the decision to conclude the consultation process and reprocess the revised draft for further deliberation. This action, formally communicated via a Press Brief on February 22, 2025, and a letter from the Ministry to the BCI Chairman, highlights the government’s dedication to ensuring a fair and inclusive legislative process.

The BCI has maintained an ongoing dialogue with Union Law Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, addressing concerns raised by the legal fraternity. The Minister has assured that contentious issues will be thoroughly reviewed, with no provisions passed that would undermine the autonomy or dignity of the legal profession.

Acknowledging the government’s proactive stance, the BCI emphasizes that the amendments will be made only after thorough consultation, ensuring reforms align with the interests of advocates nationwide. In light of these positive developments, the BCI urges Bar Associations and legal professionals to refrain from unnecessary protests or strikes, confident that the government’s approach will lead to constructive outcomes.

As the consultation process continues, the BCI remains committed to safeguarding the rights and professional independence of advocates, assuring the legal community that their interests are at the forefront of these discussions.

In light of the latest developments, the BCI urges Bar Associations who had previously called for abstentions to resume court work starting Monday, February 24, 2025.
