Barking Crisis: Supreme Court Takes Suo Moto Case Over Alarming Rise in Stray Dog Attacks on Children in Delhi

On Monday, July 28, 2025, the Supreme Court of India took Suo moto cognizance of a disturbing news report titled “City Hounded by Strays and Kids Pay Price,” published in the Delhi edition of The Times of India. Responding to the alarming rise in attacks by unvaccinated stray dogs, the Court registered a writ petition highlighting the growing threat to infants, children, and the elderly—many of whom have reportedly fallen victim to rabies.
A bench Comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan issued an order directing “Week has started and the first thing we should do is to take Suo moto cognizance of a very disturbing and alarming news item reported by Times of India in its today Delhi edition titled “City hounded by stray and kids pay price “. The news item contains some alarming and disturbing figures and facts. Every day, hundreds of dog’s bites reported in cities and areas in outskirts, leading to rabies and untimely young infants, children and aged following prey to this dreadful disease. The news item is attached herewith. Let this order be placed, we take Suo moto cognisance of this news item. Registry shall register the petition and register it as Suo moto. Let order be placed with news report before Hon’ble CJI for appropriate orders
