A delegation comprising of 5 chairmen of Southern states-Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala met Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday and submitted a representation for creation of a bench of Supreme Court of India in south India.
The delegation comprised Bar Council Telangana Chairperson A. Narsimha Reddy, Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh Chairperson Rama Rao Ghanta, Bar Council of Tamil Nadu Chairperson Amal Raj PS, Bar Council of Karnataka Chair person Srinivas Babu, Bar Council of Kerala Vice-chairperson, Anil Kumar KN Bar Council member, Bar Council Member of Telangana Konda Reddy and Ex-Law maker from Telangana, Ramchandra Rao.
Earlier in January this year a committee was constituted to achieve this goal and make necessary representations to the authorities.
The committee had elected Telangana Bar Council Chairperson A. Narsimha Reddy, as convenor.
The demand for a separate Supreme Court bench for the south is there for a while, this is perhaps the first instance that 5 southern states bar Councils Chairpersons have submitted a representation to the top authorities.
The Chiefs of theses Bar Councils deliberated this conducting a webinar organised by the Telangana State bar Council.
It is was incomprehensible as to why the Supreme Court is not setting up its appellate benches in four parts of the country. The Supreme Court at Delhi can exclusively concentrate on constitutional issues while its appellate benches in the four corners would decide the appeals emanating from the High Courts.
In 2019, MDMK General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, raised the long-standing demand in the Upper House of the Parliament of setting up of a bench of the Supreme Court in South India for the convenience of the
litigants.
