AM Ahmadi, Former Chief Justice of India Passes Away at 91

Hyderabad: Justice AM Ahmadi, former Chief Justice of India, died on Thursday morning at around 5 am.
Justice Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi was born on March 25, 1932 in Surat. After receiving the bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), AM Ahmadi joined the Bar in 1954.
He was appointed as a Judge in City Civil & Sessions Court in Ahmedabad, and was later elevated to the Gujurat High Court.
Justice Ahmadi was the son of a junior civil judge and spent a large part of hisearly years living in various districts and talukas.
He was elevated to Supreme Court in December 1988 and took over as Chief Justice of India in 1994.
Some of the notable judgements of which he was a part include Indra Sawhney V.Union of India and Imail Faruqui V.Union of India.
He alsomserved on the ravi and Beas Water Disputes Tribunal as part of the rajiv-Longowal Settlement before being nominated to the Suprme Court on India in December 1988. He was the third Muslim to hold office.
He worked as Chairman of Adisory board under conservation of foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974.Adivsory Board under the Prevention Black Marketing, and maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, Gujurat State Third Paycommission.
He also worked as president, Supreme Court legal Aid Committee in 1989and as Executive Chairman, Committee for implementing Legal Aid Schemesin India from 1st November, 1990 to 24th Ocober, 1994.
He wrote 232 judgements and sitting on 811 benches, Ahmadi announced his resignation in March 1997,
After leaving Apex Court, Ahmadi became chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He was re-elected for a third term in 2002.
