CJI DY Chandrachud Expresses Concern on Student Suicides: Urges Educational Institutions to Focus on Empathy (Judicial Quest News Network) Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud in his address expressed his concern with regards to the increase in the incidents of suicide of students from marginalised communities, he urged the educational institutions to reshape legal education model to make empathy a core value of our legal system. Speaking about the Suicide of a Dalit student at IIT Bombay in the recent past and a tribal student at NLU Odhissa, he said: He said “My heart goes out to the family members of these students. “In these instances, incidents of suicides from marginalised communities are becoming common. “These numbers are not just statistics these are stories of sometimes centuries of struggle. He further said that if we start to address this issue then we must first step is to acknowledge and recognise the problem. said compared to the older decades the current generation of students have wider and deeper access to information and knowledge. He asked the students not only to remember the faculty but also the labour of the support staff and workers who contributed for the development of the institution.  This shall be the true meaning of dignity which supreme court recognized as part of right to life. He reiterated that empathy is not a luxury. Empathy can breakdown the barrier in accessing the justice. That is why we must also understand the education from the lens of empathy. In our educational institutions today, we tend to focus on the excellence. We are taught that our lives will be better only when we excel in our studies or in our professional life. However, the Chief justice added that education will be complete when it nurtures the values of empathy and compassion. Our educational institutions must not limit itself in promoting the competitions among the students but also shape their outlook towards life where empathy is a crucial component. Excellence in life cannot go without empathy was the core message given by the Chief justice of India.  He also urged the education curriculum must inculcate a sense of compassion among students but the academic leaders must also be sensitives to their concerns. He urged the students to develop the habit of studying the non-law subjects. He said that the courts treat all men, high and low, rich and poor as equal. He reminded the students that the power comes with great responsibility. All institutions shape the future of the country and he congratulated the leadership of the NALSAR University for celebrating the silver jubilee and shaping the lives of young people. On the moment of celebration, we should take the chance to think about the large issues concerning the society. He reflected on the state of higher education from philosophical perspective from the lens of empathy. He said that empathy is essential ingredient in the law and it is that separates the just society from unjust one. It is the critical component of the justice that facilitates and promotes compassionate view of justice. The supreme court looks from the lens of empathy while disposing of large number of motor accident cases and balancing the technical aspects of it. The vice-Chancellor Prof Sri Krishna Deva Rao, Vice Chancellor NALSAR University of Law,  In his welcoming addresssaid that in this silver jubilee year NALSAR University of law will strive hard to achieve new heights of excellence. He said in coming days the University will equip itself to become multi-disciplinary. Further he congratulated the teachers and the students on their remarkable achievements. Prof. Rao also said that this year there will be an effort to forge closer relationship with the alumni for well-rounded development of the University. He wished the graduates to prosper in life and also stick to the core human values in all their walks of life. He advised the graduates to be close to their roots and have a consciousness to build a just social economic order   envisioned by our great leaders like Dr.B.R. Ambedkar.
