[Breaking] Justice D.Y Chandrachud Sworn In as 50th Chief Justice of India

Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday was sworn in as 50th Chief Justice of India after Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demitted office.

President of India Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to the newly sworn-in- Chief Justice of India at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

The previous CJI UU Lalit had recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachudas his successor on October 11, which the president accepted on October 17.

In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, with effect from 09th November, 2022.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal,Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, Previous Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and other Supreme Court Judges were present on the occasion.

The senior most Judge of the Supreme Court of India Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday became the 50th head of the Judiciary of the Country. He will have his tenure till November 10, 2024.Making it one of the longest terms of a CJI in the recent past. Last Month the Central government had notified the name of Dr. DY Chandrachud Justice Chandrachud, in his six years at the Supreme Court so far, has delivered several seminal judgments- including the decriminalization of homosexuality, decriminalization of adultery, declaration of privacy as a fundamental right and combating caste and gender discrimination through the Indian Constitution. His judgments, including his notable dissents, have enriched Indian jurisprudence on constitutional law, human rights law, gender justice, criminal law and labour law. His vision for a just and equitable society precedes his days at the bench. As an advocate practicing predominantly at the Bombay Bar, he was a champion for several causes, including the right to privacy, the rights of HIV+ workers, religious and linguistic minority rights. As the current Chairperson of the E-committee, Supreme Court of India, he is spearheading a digital transition of the judicial system in India, with an aim of ensuring access, transparency and accountability.

The e-committee is providing services such as e-filing of cases, virtual Courts, and a National Judicial Data Grid in furtherance of the principle of open Courts. He was also a member of the 5-judge bench which decided the Aydhya-Babri Masjid case.

Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, B.A. (Hons). LL.M., was born on November 11, 1959. He was enrolled as an Advocate on July 20, 1982. He started his Professional career in New Delhi and practiced in the Supreme Court until 1988. Thereafter, he practiced on the Original Side and Appellate Side of the Bombay High Court in civil, constitutional, administrative, arbitration, admiralty, banking, company, excise, consumer protection, education, income tax, land acquisition, rent act, labour and service matters. He appeared before the High Courts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Calcutta, Allahabad and Delhi High Courts. He also appeared before Company Law Board, FERA Board, MRTP Commission, National Consumer Commission, State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, etc. He specialised in constitutional and administrative laws. He functioned as Standing Counsel for the Reserve Bank of India, and various Public Sector undertakings. He was the Visiting Professor of International Law, Oklahoma, University School of Law at Norman, USA in 1984. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000 and the term further extended up to March 29, 2004. He was appointed as Permanent Judge on January 21, 2003. He was appointed as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013.
