Breaking: Justice UU Lalit’s Name Recommended by CJI NV Ramana as Next Chief Justice of India

Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Thursday morning recommended the name of Justice UU Lalit, the senior-most Supreme Court judge,as the next Chief Justice of India.
Justice UU lalit has been a part of the several landmark judgements,he was the part of the majority opinion of the Constitution Bench judgement which declared the Triple Talaq as unconstitutional.
If appointed Justice UU Lalitwill become the second CJI who was directly elevated to the apex court Bench from the Bar.
Justcie SM Sikri, who became the 13th CJI in January 1971, was the first lawyer to be elevated directly to the top court in March 1964.
As a lawyer Justice UU lalit was especially known for his practice in the field of criminal law and has handled several high profile cases. In 2011, the Supreme Court had appointed him as Special Public Prosecutor in the 2G scam case.
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, B.A., LL.B., was born on 09th November, 1957 and enrolled as an Advocate of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in June, 1983.
He joined the chambers of M.A. Rane and practised in the High Court of Bombay till December, 1985 and shifted his practice to Delhi in January 1986 and worked as Junior in the chambers of Soli J. Sorabjee from October 1986 till 1992.
He was also on the panel of lawyers for Union of India during the period he was Attorney General for India.
From 1992 till 2002 he practised as Advocate on Record and was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in April 2004.
He was also appointed Amicus Curiae in many matters Forest matters, Vehicular Pollution, Pollution of Yamuna etc.
He was appointed as Special Public Prosecutor for CBI under the orders of the Supreme Court to conduct trail in all 2G matters.
He is member of Supreme Court of India Legal Services Committee for two terms. He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on August 13, 2014. He is due to retire on November 8, 2022.
