Editors Guild Demands Immediate Release of Journalist Arrested by UP Police

The Editors Guild of India on Monday demanded the immediate release of journalist who was arrested by up police and allegedly tortured for reporting about electoral malpractices in the recently concluded Assembly Elections.
The Editor’s body said the police arrested Mr. Gaurav Bansal and was given a third degree torture and humiliated by police officers as quoted by the Lawyers of Journalist.
The Editors Guild of India has expressed deep concern over the arrest of Journalist by Agra Police and demands that Gaurav Bansal be treated fairly by the state administration and that he be released immediately. Further an independent court monitored inquiry is done to investigate into the charges of torture by the police. EGI also urges the state government to ensure that the rights of media are protected and journalists are not harassed from doing their job fearlessly.
Guild also urged the state administration and the law enforcement agencies to not use “Penal” laws as tool of intimidation against Journalists “
In the present instance, the Guild, noted that, FIR was filed against for his reporting about the mal practices that were observed in the recent Assembly elections of UP.
The Police on the other hand charged him under various penal laws for obstructing a government officer from discharging his duty.
The Guild feels that it is an act to intimidate the free reporting on sensitive issues.
It is further demanded that an independent court monitored inquiry be initiated to investigate into the charges of torture by the police. EGI also urges the state government to ensure that the rights of media are protected and journalists are not harassed from doing their job fearlessly
