New Delhi:27, May,2026- In a significant development aimed at bolstering the judicial strength of the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has formally recommended the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and a distinguished Senior Advocate to the Bench of the Supreme Court of India.
The resolution, passed to address the impending vacancies in the apex court, marks a pivotal moment in the judicial appointments process.
The Collegium, comprising the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, deliberated extensively on the merit, integrity, and seniority of the candidates before arriving at a consensus.
The Judicial Appointments
The Collegium has proposed the names of the following High Court Chief Justices for elevation to the Supreme Court:
- Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva: Currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
- Justice Shree Chanrashekhar: The Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
- Justice Sheel Nagu: Currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
- Justice Arun Palli: The Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and ladakh.
- Sr. Adv. V.Mohana presently practising before the Supreme Court
The recommendation of these jurists underscores the Collegium’s commitment to elevating individuals with vast judicial experience and proven track records in adjudicating complex legal matters.
Their elevation is expected to bring diverse regional perspectives and rich legal acumen to the Supreme Court Bench.
A Direct Elevation from the Bar
In a notable move reflecting the Collegium’s effort to bridge the gap between the Bar and the Bench, the body has also recommended the name of Senior Advocate V. Mohana for appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Advocate Mohana’s selection is particularly significant as it represents a direct elevation from the Bar, rather than from the judiciary.
This decision highlights the Collegium’s recognition of her exceptional legal scholarship, advocacy skills, and contribution to the field of law.
Her inclusion is anticipated to enrich the court’s deliberations with the insights of a seasoned practitioner.
Procedural Forwarding
The recommendations of the Collegium have been forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for the necessary procedural formalities. Following the receipt of the government’s concurrence, the appointments will be officially notified by the President of India.
These recommendations come as part of the ongoing effort to maintain the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court and ensure the timely adjudication of cases pending before the apex court.
The legal fraternity now awaits the formal notification of these appointments with keen interest.
