(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
18, May,2026- The Judges Inquiry Committee probing allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma formally submitted its report today to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, at Parliament House. The submission, made on 18 May 2026, fulfils the statutory requirements of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, and initiates the next procedural phase in which the report will be laid before both Houses of Parliament.
Presiding Officer of the Committee, Justice Aravind Kumar of the Supreme Court of India, accompanied by Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, and B.V. Acharya, Senior Advocate of the Karnataka High Court, presented the report to the Speaker.
The presentation marks the culmination of the committee’s investigative mandate, which was originally constituted by the Speaker on 12 August 2025.
In line with legal protocol, the Committee’s findings will now be placed before the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for further consideration.
The submission triggers parliamentary procedures prescribed under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, including potential deliberations and determinations on any recommended actions.
Officials emphasised that the report was prepared following a comprehensive review of evidence and testimony collected during the inquiry.
Observers noted the high-profile composition of the panel blending judicial and senior legal expertise and described the report’s presentation as a significant step in the oversight of judicial accountability.
Parliamentary timelines for laying the report and any ensuing debates or motions will depend on scheduling by the respective Houses.
The Committee’s formation in August 2025 and its subsequent investigative work reflect the institutional mechanisms for addressing serious allegations against members of the judiciary, balancing transparency with due process.
Further updates will follow as Parliament takes up the report and outlines next steps in accordance with the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
