NHRC Takes Serious Note of Ropeway Mishap in Chhattisgarh, Initiates Inquiry
(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
In a swift response to a tragic ropeway accident in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken Suo motu cognizance of the incident, signalling serious concerns over public safety and possible administrative lapses.
The mishap, which claimed the life of a woman and left at least 16 others injured, has drawn the Commission’s attention amid reports suggesting potential negligence in the operation and maintenance of the ropeway system.
Acting on media accounts, the NHRC has initiated an inquiry to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident and to examine whether established safety protocols were compromised.
Sources indicate that notices are likely to be issued to the district administration and concerned authorities, calling for a detailed report on the incident, including the status of rescue operations, medical treatment provided to the injured, and measures in place to prevent such occurrences.
The Commission’s intervention underscores a broader concern regarding infrastructural safety and regulatory oversight in public utility systems, particularly those catering to large numbers of civilians. The NHRC is expected to closely scrutinize accountability at multiple levels, including operators and local authorities.
Further developments are awaited as the inquiry progresses, with the possibility of recommendations or directions being issued based on the findings.
