Kerala Congress Turmoil: Suspended MLA Rahul Mamkootathil Booked for Sexual Assault
(By Syed Ali Taher Abedi)
Thiruvananthapuram,28, November,2025: A political storm erupted in Kerala after a woman on Thursday met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and submitted a complaint alleging sexual assault and grave misconduct by suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil. Acting on her complaint, the Kerala Police registered an FIR against Mamkootathil at the Valiyamala Police Station, booking him under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as sections of the Information Technology Act.
According to the complainant, the MLA not only sexually assaulted her but also forced her to undergo a pregnancy termination. She further alleged that Mamkootathil had recorded intimate moments without her consent and later threatened to release the footage. The police stated that an investigation is underway and assured that all claims will be examined thoroughly.
Meanwhile, the suspended MLA moved the Thiruvananthapuram Sessions Court on Friday seeking anticipatory bail. In his petition, Mamkootathil denied all allegations, describing them as false, frivolous, and politically motivated. He contended that the complaint surfaced only after his emergence as a prominent Opposition MLA and young political leader. He admitted to having had a relationship with the complainant but maintained that it was consensual.
Mamkootathil further alleged that the complainant is married to a BJP member and lives with him, suggesting that her political affiliations, along with her employment in a media organisation, pointed to a larger political conspiracy behind the allegations. He argued that the case was orchestrated to divert public attention from the controversy surrounding gold theft at the Sabarimala temple, and claimed the Left government was attempting to exploit the situation.
Asserting that custodial interrogation was unnecessary, the MLA urged the court to grant him anticipatory bail.
The sessions court is expected to hear the matter shortly as the case continues to trigger heated political debate across Kerala.
