CJI Gavai Forwards Justice Surya Kant’s Name to Centre for Top Judicial Post

Delhi,27, October,2025 –The Chief Justice of India, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, recommends the name of Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant, the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor to be the 53rd Chief Justice of India.

CJI BR Gavai has written to the Union Law Ministry.

 Justice Surya Kant born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, rose from modest beginnings to occupy one of the highest judicial offices in the country. A graduate of Government Post Graduate College, Hisar (1981), he earned his Bachelor of Laws from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. That same year, he began his legal career at the District Court in Hisar.

In 1985, Justice Surya Kant moved to Chandigarh to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he specialized in Constitutional, Service, and Civil law. Over the years, he represented numerous institutions including universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court itself.

His legal acumen earned him the distinction of being appointed the youngest Advocate General of Haryana on July 7, 2000. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in March 2001 and continued to serve as Advocate General until his elevation as a permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.

Justice Surya Kant was later nominated to the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority, serving two consecutive terms from February 23, 2007, to February 22, 2011. He remains actively involved with the Indian Law Institute, a deemed university under the aegis of the Supreme Court of India, as a member of various committees.

In 2011, he earned his Master’s degree in Law from Kurukshetra University through its Directorate of Distance Education, graduating First Class First. Throughout his career, he has participated in and organized numerous national and international legal conferences.

Justice Surya Kant assumed charge as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019,
