New Delhi, September 13, 2025: In a sweeping disciplinary measure, the Delhi Bar Council (BCD) has permanently revoked the licenses of more than 100 advocates after their law degrees and mark sheets were found to be fake or forged. The crackdown follows directives from the Bar Council of India (BCI) and comes after a series of verifications conducted between 2023 and 2025 revealed widespread irregularities in the academic credentials submitted by several individuals for enrolment.

Acting under the authority of the proviso to Section 26(1) of the Advocates Act, 1961, the BCD issued a formal notification removing the names of these individuals from its roll of advocates. The notification, signed by BCD Secretary Col. Arun Sharma (Retd.), categorically states that the revocation is permanent, thereby barring the affected individuals from practicing law in any court across the country.

According to officials, the decision was taken after the concerned universities confirmed that the degrees and mark sheets submitted by these advocates were fake or forged. “The credibility of the legal profession depends on the integrity of its practitioners. Such stringent measures are essential to preserve the dignity of the bar and the faith of the public in the justice delivery system,” a senior BCD member said.

Further, the notification directs all Bar Councils across India to display the order prominently on their notice boards, ensuring that the information is widely disseminated across the legal fraternity.

Legal experts have termed the action as one of the most significant clean-up measures taken by the Bar Council in recent years, signalling a zero-tolerance approach toward malpractice and fraudulent entry into the profession.

Official Notification the formal notification of removal was signed by Col Arun Sharma (Retd), Secretary of the Delhi Bar Council. The document outlines the names of the disbarred individuals and the basis for their removal. In a bid to ensure transparency and awareness, all bar councils across India have been requested to display this notification prominently on their notice boards.

National Implications this action is part of a broader initiative led by the BCI to restore public trust in the legal system and ensure that only qualified and ethically sound individuals are permitted to practice law. The BCI has previously removed hundreds of fake advocates across various states, citing similar concerns over forged documentation and misrepresentation during enrolment.

Statement from the BCI In an earlier statement, the BCI emphasized its commitment to maintaining “integrity and professionalism” within the legal community, noting that such actions are essential to protect the public and uphold the sanctity of the judicial process
