Hyderabad, July 16, 2025 — In a moment of profound recognition, Shujath Ali—distinguished journalist, public intellectual, and noted social activist—was conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Honourable Governor of Telangana. The ceremonial honor celebrates his lifelong contributions to journalism, cultural dialogue, and secular thought.
Born into a legacy of spiritual wisdom as the son of revered Sufi-Saint Mohammad Ismail Soofi Chisti Al-Quadri Sultani Harooni, Mr. Ali’s life has spanned diverse fields with equal passion and impact. A veteran of the Indian Information Service, he once led the National Student Union of India (NSUI) Hyderabad Unit in 1980 before stepping into government service. His journalism journey includes foundational editorial roles at Munsif Daily—India’s largest Urdu daily—Rehnuma-e-Deccan Daily, and Milap Daily, where his voice shaped public discourse in Urdu media across decades.
Widely respected as a Social Scientist and Sufi Philosopher, Mr. Ali founded Samaj Darpan, a cultural organization that has hosted over 300 seminars and symposia since 1976, tackling a wide range of societal issues. His progressive poetry on secularism continues to resonate deeply with audiences, amplifying messages of unity and compassion.
As an official spokesperson frequently seen on leading national channels such as Times Now, TV18, and TV9, he has championed dialogue on pressing national matters. Mr. Ali has also contributed significantly to media education, leading interactive sessions on Media Management for IPS probationers at the National Police Academy and serving as a resource person for the A.P Police Academy and the National Industrial Security Academy in Hyderabad.
Among his many accolades are the Lifetime Achievement Award from the undivided Andhra Pradesh Urdu Academy and the Best PRO Award from both the Public Relations Society of India and the United Hindu-Muslim Front.
The Governor’s conferral of the PhD degree not only honours Mr. Ali’s towering legacy in media and public service but also underscores the enduring need for voices that bridge cultures, defend press freedom, and elevate civil society.
