Justice Sanjiv Khanna Brings Judicial Wisdom to HPNLU Shimla Post-Retirement Appointed as Distinguished Professor

Shimla 16, July, 2025-The Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla (HPNLU) has announced the esteemed appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the 51st Chief Justice of India, as Distinguished Professor, bringing decades of judicial experience and legal scholarship to the academic sphere.

Justice Khanna officially retired from the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2025, after a distinguished tenure that began with his elevation to the apex court on January 18, 2019. His judicial journey is marked by notable leadership roles, including serving as Patron-in-Chief of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Chairperson of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal (NJA) Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) Executive Chairman of NALSA

An alumnus of Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, Justice Khanna enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. His early practice in Delhi’s District Courts and later specialization in the High Court of Delhi saw him handle a wide spectrum of legal subjects—from Constitutional Law and Direct Taxation to Environmental Protection and Medical Negligence.

His career also included serving as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department (7 years) Senior Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi Additional Public Prosecutor in the Delhi High Court Amicus curiae in cases of public interest

Justice Khanna was appointed as Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on June 24, 2005, and confirmed as a Permanent Judge on February 20, 2006. During his tenure, he headed key judicial bodies including the Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre, and District Court Mediation Centres.

His new role at HPNLU promises to enrich legal education by bridging practical jurisprudence with academic rigor—a legacy of wisdom and service that continues beyond the bench.
