New Delhi, January,30,2025. India is on the brink of launching its own safe, secure, and affordable indigenous AI model, set to revolutionize technological accessibility for researchers, developers, and the general public. Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Mr.Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the move today at Electronics Niketan in New Delhi, emphasizing India’s growing role as a trusted and ethical leader in the global AI landscape.
The AI model will be backed by a robust computing infrastructure, including 18,693 GPUs, and is designed to cater to India’s specific linguistic, cultural, and contextual needs. This initiative will make AI affordable, with the cost of computation expected to drop to less than ₹100 per hour after a 40% government subsidy—far lower than the global market rate of $2.5–$3 per hour. It will provide researchers, students, and developers with a high-performance platform to create cutting-edge AI models and applications.
The model will launch with 18 citizen-focused applications, addressing critical sectors like agriculture, climate change, and learning disabilities. In addition, IndiaAI’s open-source platform, DeepSeek, will be hosted on Indian servers after security checks, further benefiting the global AI community.
Mr. Vaishnaw also announced the creation of the IndiaAI Safety Institute, focused on the ethical deployment of AI technologies, alongside eight key projects to address AI privacy, algorithmic fairness, and risk management.
The initiative is supported by an ambitious AI mission with an allocation of ₹10,372 crore and aims to transform India into a global hub for AI development. The mission is set to foster innovation, democratize access to AI, and empower people across sectors with affordable, high-quality AI solutions.
India’s AI ecosystem will be built on ethical principles and will focus on localizing AI to benefit society, with applications ranging from healthcare and agriculture to disaster management. This moves positions India as a leader in both technological advancement and ethical AI deployment.
