Justice KS Puttaswamy, a former judge of the Karnataka High Court and the lead petitioner in the historic right to privacy case, has passed away at the age of 98. Justice Puttaswamy, who enrolled as an advocate in 1952, was appointed as a judge of the Karnataka High Court in 1977 and served until his retirement in 1986. He later served as the vice-chairperson of the Central Administration Tribunal in Bangalore.
In 2012, Puttaswamy famously challenged the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme before the Supreme Court. Although the apex court did not strike down the scheme, it made a landmark ruling that recognized the right to privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution. This significant judgement has had a lasting impact on the interpretation of the right to life in India
