(Judicial Quest News Network)
The Calcutta High Court has directed a postmortem to be conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani, following the father’s request for a postmortem at a hospital under the union government. The High Court expressed concern that charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were not initially included in the investigation of the rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl in Jayanagar, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The Court ordered the police to add the relevant sections of the POCSO Act and to produce the accused before the special court.
Violence erupted after the girl’s body was discovered, leading to clashes between opposition supporters and the police. Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized that charges under the POCSO Act must be registered, and the perpetrators should face capital punishment swiftly
The police claimed to have arrested the accused within five hours of receiving the complaint, despite allegations of inaction. Meanwhile, BJP leaders staged demonstrations, leading to further confrontations with the
police.
